Client Side Tracking vs. Server Side Tracking

Most website counters are “server side” measurement tools that come with your hosting.   Two popular examples of this include Webalyzer and Webtrends.  These use data from log files that were originally designed for network administrators to monitor and adjust server loads, not to provide useful marketing information.  “Server side” tracking has two inherent problems. 

 

The first problem is that server side tracking counts server activity rather than human activity on your website.  Many large ISPs use proxy servers to store copies of your web pages in order speed up delivery of your pages to their users.  ISPs like AOL frequently do this.  When a copy (cache) of your site is stored elsewhere (on a proxy server), the server actually hosting your "real" website will not see the activity of those who are visiting your sites via proxy servers.  About 10-20% of visits to my own website are via proxy servers.  So server side tracking programs like Webalyzer and Webtrends cannot count proxy visits. 

 

The second problem is that server side tracking counts search engine spiders and robots that are trying to index your site, so you get an over count that includes these irrelevant "visitors."  

 

Beyond these two major problems, many of these server side packages simply don't give you the detailed data you need, the flexibility to choose any date range you choose for your reporting, and the ability to download the data into a spreadsheet or other format.  Plus, many website owners don’t even have direct access to their web stats.  You shouldn’t have to ask your website designer or host to send you stats.  You need to know what’s going on all of the time, on your time.

 

Client side tracking, on the other hand, installs tracking devices on each page of your website so that regardless of whether your web page is viewed from your website's true hosting server or from a proxy server, it gets counted.  And client side trackers filter out search engine spiders much better to avoid an over count of useless visits.  So you get good information!
